Procter & Gamble axes Massachusetts plant and 300 jobs

Procter & Gamble is to close its packaging plant in Deven, Massachusetts in 2010, resulting in the loss of more than 300 jobs.

Many of the workers affected by the closure are employed by Sonoco Products, the industrial and consumer packaging company.

The others affected are temporary contract workers.

More than 50 of the workers will be moved from the Devens site to another plant in Andover, Massachusetts.

A spokesman for Sonoco said the packaging operation would be moved to Mexico.
