Asda signs up to Every Can Counts scheme

Asda is joining the Every Can Counts drinks can recycling initiative and will trial facilities in 49 stores in the North West of England.

Every Can Counts is designed to promote recycling in the workplace. Asda decided to adopt the scheme after staff expressed an interest in being able to recycle at work.

Waste and recycling manager Jonathan Wylie said: "We believe it is important that we make it as easy as possible for our colleagues to recycle."

Asda said it would introduce the scheme in 360 stores nationwide if the Lancashire trial is successful.

The Every Can Counts scheme was launched in October to recover the 30% of drinks cans consumed away from home. It received government approval in February when then waste minister Jane Kennedy praised its systematic approach to improving recycling.

Beverage Can Makers Europe, UK Canmakers, Wrap, Novelis and Corus Steel Packaging Recycling fund Every Can Counts. It is run by aluminium recycling organisation Alupro.
