Turner Duckworth wins Grammy for Metallica album pack

Design agency Turner Duckworth has won a Grammy for its work on Metallica's international hit album Death Magnetic.

The London and San Francisco-based agency won the award in the Best Recording Package category.

Turner Duckworth partners Bruce Duckworth and David Turner and design director Sarah Moffit worked alongside art directors Metallica to design the album cover.

The band's lead singer James Hetfield said: "This time we wanted to work with professionals who understand iconography."

"We wanted somebody who commanded respect in branding, but were not jaded by the music business," added the band's drummer Lars Ulrich.

Turner Duckworth was tasked with creating a pack that adhered to the limits set by the major music suppliers in the US, WalMart, Target and Best Buy.

The agency created a die-cut layered design that was instantly recognisable on a mobile phone screen. Partner David Turner explained: "It's not just about sleeve art anymore, it's about creating icons that work across media."

Designers from the firm's London and San Francisco offices worked on the packaging.

"Metallica instinctively understand branding and really appreciate the value we created for them," said partner Bruce Duckworth. "There was no rock star attitude, just enthusiasm and creativity."
