FSA to advise Asda traffic light is best

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is reviewing its recommendations for food traffic light labelling, to more closely resemble Asda's.

The FSA conducted research, which found that the most popular form of traffic light labelling was that used by Asda, which uses red, amber and green, the words ‘high', ‘medium' and ‘low', and gives guideline daily amounts.

The FSA's signposting team is now investigating the logistical and technical implications of recommending this design.

"We asked independent experts to evaluate all of the schemes and that was the one that came back top," explained an FSA spokeswoman.

The Food Standards Agency first unveiled its traffic light signposting in 2006. Since then, it has been adopted in various guises by a number of brands and retailers.

London-based design agency Bell Design created the original traffic light logo and is understood to be working on the revised design.
